In a solemn announcement, Reverend Mosese Qica, the Saru Methodist Church Circuit Minister, and his wife Adi Karalaini Seruiratu, the Jasper Williams High School Assistant Principal, were confirmed as the victims of a tragic road accident in Tavua, Fiji. The incident occurred in the early hours of the morning when their vehicle collided with an oncoming sugar cane truck while they were traveling from Tavua to Rakiraki. The truck, laden with sugar cane, was en route to Lautoka at the time of the collision.
The bodies of Reverend Qica and Ms. Seruiratu have been transported to the Lautoka Hospital mortuary, where a postmortem examination is awaited. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident is ongoing.
This tragic incident follows a similar accident involving Jope Tuivanuavou, a senior pastor from Tavualevu Village, who died in a locomotive accident in Tavua while transporting sugarcane to the Lautoka Mill. Such events highlight the perilous nature of road and rail transport in the region, especially involving heavy-duty vehicles like those carrying sugarcane, which is an integral part of the local economy.
While investigations continue into both these accidents, the local community is left grappling with these sudden and devastating losses. Both families and communities mourn these untimely deaths, reflecting on the community spirit and dedication to faith exhibited by the departed. As the victims’ families, church congregations, and educational institutions come to terms with these events, they are supported by their faith and the broader community’s condolences and prayers.
The current series of tragic accidents underscores the need for enhanced safety measures on roads and railways in the region to prevent further loss of life. The affected families and communities are urged to lean on one another for support during this difficult time.
