Fiji has made a noteworthy leap in the latest Henley Passport Index for 2026, achieving a global ranking of 54th, which reflects a positive trend in the country’s international travel mobility. This improvement marks an ascent from last year’s position of 55th and continues a slow recovery after hitting a low of 65th in 2021, attributed to strict global travel restrictions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Henley Passport Index is recognized as a leading authority on passport strength, evaluating passports based on the number of destinations that holders can access either visa-free or with visa-on-arrival. This index is based on exclusive data supplied by the International Air Transport Association (IATA) and encompasses 199 passports along with 227 travel destinations worldwide. The index is updated monthly, serving as a vital benchmark for governments, businesses, and citizens worldwide regarding travel mobility.

Over the past two decades, Fiji’s passport ranking has experienced fluctuations. The nation was ranked 51st in 2006, made strides to 49th in 2008 and 2009, but subsequently fell to 57th in 2010 and 2011. After peaking again at 51st in 2013, the ranking fell to 62nd in 2015. Yearly variations ensued, with Fiji occupying 59th position in 2019, 57th in 2020, and 62nd in 2023. However, a positive change occurred as the country improved to 59th in 2024 and ultimately 54th in 2026.

This latest ranking indicates a stabilization of Fiji’s passport strength, which is bolstered by the gradual reopening of borders, enhanced diplomatic relations, and better global travel access for Fijian citizens. Notably, the Henley Passport Index also reveals increasing mobility gaps between countries, with top-ranking passports allowing for visa-free travel to over 190 destinations, while those with lower rankings face considerable travel restrictions.

Overall, Fiji’s journey in enhancing its passport strength reflects a broader trend of recovery in global travel, paving the way for greater accessibility and opportunities for Fijians in the international arena.
