The Ministry of Education has revealed plans to reintroduce interviews for Year 13 students aiming to enter the teaching profession. This initiative, developed in partnership with Teacher Training Institutions (TTIs), the Fiji Teacher’s Registration Authority (FTRA), the Higher Education Commission Fiji (HECF), and the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service (TSLS), is part of a broader effort to improve teacher recruitment and training in Fiji.
Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro highlighted the significance of a rigorous selection process to ensure that only candidates who are genuinely passionate and qualified are considered for teaching roles. This move aligns with the 2024-2033 Denarau Declaration, which focuses on strengthening collaboration among educational stakeholders to better prepare graduates with the essential skills and knowledge needed in today’s classrooms.
Eligible students are invited to apply for scholarships through the Merit-Based Higher Education (Level 7 Local Scheme) and the Minimum Cut-Off Mark Scheme, which cover various Bachelor of Education programs and specialized areas such as Early Childhood Education, Counselling, and Industrial Arts. The deadline for submitting online applications to TSLS is set for January 31, 2025, and selected candidates will be informed of their interview details via email and phone.
Overall, this initiative represents a promising step towards enhancing the quality of education in Fiji and reflects the commitment of the Ministry of Education to foster a new generation of well-prepared educators. By investing in thorough interviews and scholarship opportunities, the government is hopeful of attracting dedicated individuals who will contribute positively to the education system.
