The Suva Retailers Association has reported that 2023 has been a challenging year for many businesses, emphasizing a heightened focus on adherence to rules and regulations. Jitesh Patel, the Association President, highlighted the extra hours retailers have dedicated to applying the recently announced reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT). This effort was crucial following the national budget announcement, as the government and regulatory bodies enforced strict measures to ensure that the VAT reduction was passed on to consumers.

Patel noted that the association held consultations with the Fiji Revenue and Customs Service and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission to support retailers in complying with the new regulations. He expressed pride in the fact that most retailers managed to navigate these challenges successfully. “Our focus has always been on thriving, not fighting,” he said, reflecting the association’s commitment to fostering a positive business environment.

In addition to VAT concerns, Patel voiced apprehensions regarding the Employment Relations Bill, which he criticized for being one-sided and lacking adequate consultation with the business community. Although there was initially limited opportunity for businesses to provide input, he observed an improvement in engagement following the involvement of the Parliamentary Consultation Committee.

The association has actively communicated their concerns through multiple press releases and collaborated with the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation to ensure that the voices of retailers are heard. These concerted efforts have resulted in positive progress and indicated that the business sector has effectively advocated for its interests.

Looking ahead, Patel is optimistic that the upcoming year will bring further improvements, particularly in terms of more equitable government relations legislation and enhanced consultation processes with the business sector. This message of hope and determination provides a positive outlook for retailers and sets the stage for potential growth and collaboration in the future.
