Toxicology reports have verified that no illegal substances or methanol were present in the ingredients of the cocktail served to seven guests at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa, who became ill last Saturday. This confirmation was made by Minister for Tourism Viliame Gavoka during a press conference held last night, as investigations by the Ministry of Health and the Police are ongoing.
The guests affected were all women, with four Australians, one American, and two foreign residents who had consumed Pina Coladas at the resort’s restaurant. Following their symptoms of nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues, they were admitted to Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Sunday.
“We are relieved to share the findings of the toxicology report, which confirmed that neither illicit substances nor methanol were present in the drinks or their ingredients served at the Warwick Fiji,” Mr. Gavoka stated. He also mentioned that all affected tourists have since been discharged from medical care and recovered fully.
The minister expressed that the absence of evidence for alcohol poisoning is excellent news for Fiji, particularly for its tourism sector. He emphasized the importance of reassuring the global community and travelers, noting, “The health and well-being of our visitors is our top priority.”
This incident serves as a reminder of the hospitality industry’s commitment to maintaining safety and quality standards. With all guests now healthy, this situation highlights the effectiveness of prompt medical attention and can restore confidence among future visitors to Fiji.
Summary: Toxicology reports have cleared the Warwick Fiji Resort of any wrongdoing, confirming no illicit substances were found in the cocktails served, and all affected guests have fully recovered. This incident boosts confidence in Fiji’s tourism sector and showcases the commitment to guest safety.
