Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has voiced his concerns regarding the hospitalization of seven individuals from a well-known Coral Coast resort over the past weekend. He assured that the government is managing the situation as effectively as possible and confirmed that samples have been collected for testing.
This statement comes after the Warwick Resort Fiji released a response highlighting that this incident, where guests reportedly fell ill after consuming piña coladas, is unprecedented for the establishment. The resort management expressed their deep concern over the incident and underscored their nearly 40-year track record in Fiji’s hospitality industry.
They emphasized their commitment to the safety of all guests, stating that they are working closely with authorities to uncover the cause of this unfortunate occurrence. Additionally, they reassured current and prospective visitors about their adherence to the highest food and beverage safety standards.
In the wake of the incident, the resort remains dedicated to supporting the affected guests and is open to addressing any specific concerns from visitors. They encourage anyone with questions to reach out to their management team for assistance.
While the police, the Ministry of Tourism, and the Ministry of Health have not provided updates on the ongoing investigations, Australia’s travel advisory website is still advising travelers to exercise normal safety precautions while visiting Fiji. The advisory includes warnings about drink spiking and methanol poisoning associated with alcoholic beverages.
A toxicology report from the Fiji Police Force is anticipated to be released later this week, and, as of the latest reports, five of the seven affected individuals have already been discharged from the hospital, while two remain under medical care. Notably, one of those hospitalized has been moved from the ICU to a general ward for continued observation.
This situation highlights the importance of safety in the hospitality industry and serves as a reminder that even well-regarded establishments can face unexpected challenges. The proactive response from the resort management and government officials is reassuring and indicates a commitment to ensuring the well-being of all visitors.
By addressing concerns openly and promptly, there is hope that the investigation will lead to new information and measures that will help prevent similar incidents in the future, ultimately reinforcing trust in Fiji’s tourism industry.
