Toxicology reports have indicated that no illicit substances or methanol were present in the ingredients of the cocktail consumed by seven guests who became ill at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast last Saturday. Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, announced the test outcomes during a press conference held last night, as investigations by the Ministry of Health and Police continue.
The group of seven affected individuals, all women, included four Australians, an American, and two local foreign residents. They were hospitalized at Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Sunday after experiencing symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological complications following the consumption of Pina Colada from the resort’s restaurant.
Gavoka expressed relief regarding the toxicology report, stating, “We are pleased to report the findings of the toxicology report and also of the testing ingredients of the drinks served at Warwick Fiji last weekend. I can confirm that no illicit substances or methanol were found in the ingredients or the drink samples.” He also mentioned that the affected tourists and locals have been discharged from the hospital and are now fully recovered.
The Minister highlighted the importance of these findings for Fiji’s tourism sector, noting that there was no evidence of alcohol poisoning. “This is great news for Fiji and will provide reassurance to the global community and all travelers. The health and well-being of our visitors is our top priority,” he added.
Overall, this incident serves as a reminder of the critical importance of food safety and health standards in the tourism industry. With the quick recovery of those affected and the reassurance of safety for future visitors, Fugitive’s tourism sector can continue to thrive, fostering confidence among travelers looking to enjoy the beautiful archipelago.
