Recent toxicology reports have determined that there were no illegal substances or methanol in the Pina Colada served to seven guests who fell ill while at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa on the Coral Coast last Saturday. This update was shared by Viliame Gavoka, the Minister for Tourism, during a press conference held last night, as investigations by the Ministry of Health and the Police are still ongoing.

The afflicted guests, all women, included four Australians, one American, and two expatriates living locally. After consuming the cocktail, they experienced symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, and neurological issues, leading to their admission at Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Sunday.

Minister Gavoka expressed relief at the findings of the toxicology report, stating, “We are pleased to report the findings of the toxicology report and also of the testing ingredients of the drinks served at the Warwick Fiji last weekend. I can confirm that no elusive substances or methanol were found in the ingredients or the drink samples.” He also shared that the guests have since been discharged and are now fully recovered.

This revelation is particularly encouraging for Fiji’s tourism sector, as the absence of evidence for alcohol poisoning helps to reassure both local residents and international travelers about the safety of enjoying drinks at the resort. Minister Gavoka emphasized the well-being of visitors as a top priority, stating that these findings are crucial for restoring confidence in the hospitality industry.

In summary, while the incident raised initial concerns, the quick response and the negative toxicology results have provided a hopeful outlook, allowing Fiji to maintain its reputation as a safe travel destination.
