Toxicology reports have confirmed that no illegal substances or methanol were present in the ingredients or the Pina Colada cocktail served to seven guests who fell ill at the Warwick Fiji Resort and Spa last Saturday. The Minister for Tourism, Viliame Gavoka, announced these results during a press conference, noting that investigations are ongoing by both the Ministry of Health and the Police.
The seven affected guests, all women, included four Australians, an American, and two local residents, who experienced nausea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms after consuming the drink. They were treated at Aspen Medical Hospital in Lautoka on Sunday.
Minister Gavoka expressed relief at the findings of the toxicology report, stating, “no illicit substances or methanol were found in the ingredients or the drink samples.” He also highlighted that all tourists and locals affected have since been discharged from the hospital and are fully recovered.
This news is particularly positive for Fiji’s tourism sector, offering reassurance to travelers regarding their health and safety while enjoying the offerings of the island nation. Minister Gavoka emphasized that the well-being of visitors is a priority, stating: “These findings bring much-needed reassurance to the global community and all travelers.”
This incident, while concerning, has brought light to the robustness of Fiji’s health protocols and the swift response from medical teams. The prompt recovery of those affected underscores the dedication of healthcare professionals in ensuring the safety of both tourists and residents.
In summary, the situation has been resolved with no ongoing health risks identified, allowing Fiji to maintain its reputation as a safe travel destination.
