Fiji has reported its first road fatality of 2026 following a tragic motor vehicle collision near Nasue Settlement in Vunilagi, Savusavu. The incident occurred yesterday, resulting in the death of a woman in her 60s from Buca Village.

According to police reports, the woman was a passenger in a vehicle driven by a 43-year-old man. Their vehicle reportedly veered into the opposite lane and collided with an oncoming vehicle operated by a 51-year-old man. The impact of the crash also left two children, aged six and 15, who were inside the same vehicle, injured.

All three injured individuals were promptly taken to Savusavu Hospital, where unfortunately, the woman succumbed to her injuries. As investigations are underway, police officials have indicated that they will be questioning the driver of the vehicle the victim was in to better understand the circumstances leading to this accident.

This incident raises significant concern, as the national road death toll now stands at one, marking a difference from zero fatalities during the same period last year. It serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance behind the wheel. Authorities are likely to reinforce their campaigns for safer driving to prevent such tragedies in the future.
