The Fiji Cancer Society reported a concerning increase of 442 new cancer cases last year across the Central, Western, and Northern Divisions, underscoring the importance of awareness and early detection in the fight against the disease. This figure was spotlighted during an event at the Grand Pacific Hotel in Suva, where the iconic building was illuminated in orange to commemorate World Cancer Day, demonstrating solidarity for patients, survivors, and their families.
Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua addressed the crowd, emphasizing that this year’s theme, “United by Unique,” highlights the individuality of each cancer journey and reinforces the idea that no one should face this battle alone. The orange lighting symbolizes strength, energy, and optimism, aiming to uplift those enduring their fight against cancer, whether at home or in medical facilities.
During her speech, Qereqeretabua acknowledged the vital roles played by families, caregivers, and healthcare professionals, whose unwavering support and dedication greatly impact the lives of those affected by cancer. However, she expressed concern that many individuals in Fiji are still being diagnosed at more advanced stages of the illness.
“Talking openly saves lives. Advocacy brings healing into the light. And early detection is one of our strongest weapons,” she stated, urging the public to prioritize regular screenings, such as pap smears, breast self-checks, and prostate exams. Additionally, she advocated for healthier lifestyles through proper diet and physical activity to help mitigate the risks associated with cancer.
The Assistant Minister also praised the Fiji Cancer Society for their efforts in supporting patients through medication, surgeries, and transportation to oncology appointments, underlining the collective commitment toward improving cancer care and support in Fiji. This initiative not only highlights the urgency of early detection but also fosters a sense of community and hope for individuals affected by cancer.
