A comprehensive National Peacekeeping Strategy is being developed by the Fijian government to redefine the country’s role in international security missions. Defence and Veteran Affairs Minister Pio Tikoduadua announced this initiative in Parliament, emphasizing the need for a strategy that articulates the purpose, scope, and nature of Fiji’s peacekeeping contributions.
This strategy is aimed at establishing clear criteria for selecting missions and defining what success means beyond military achievements. Tikoduadua stressed the importance of setting standards for training to ensure that personnel are adequately prepared before deployment. Furthermore, he highlighted that the strategy will address post-service care, family support, and the reintegration of veterans into society.
Minister Tikoduadua also raised crucial questions about the interests of Fiji concerning peacekeeping missions, such as evaluating when involvement in international operations adds value or becomes a burden. He recalled Fiji’s historical role in leading peacekeeping efforts in the region, notably during the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI), showcasing the effective approach taken with cultural respect and collaborative Pacific solutions.
Looking ahead, Tikoduadua expressed confidence that the new National Peacekeeping Strategy will enrich Fiji’s reputation in international peacekeeping. He believes it will not diminish Fiji’s presence in global affairs but will instead enhance its purpose and align more closely with contemporary global security challenges.
This initiative reflects a proactive understanding of the evolving landscape of conflict, ensuring that Fiji can adapt its strategies to maintain its significant role in promoting global peace and stability. The hope is that through this National Peacekeeping Strategy, Fiji will continue to foster positive relationships and contribute meaningfully to international security efforts.
