Civil service examinations have made a significant comeback in Fiji after almost a decade, marking the completion of a pivotal training program at the Fiji Learning Institute for Public Service. The first cohort of officers, numbering 41, graduated from the Introduction to Government Machineries course, the first of its kind since the program was halted in 2015.

Public Service Commission Chair Luke Rokovada emphasized the importance of this achievement, stating, “Today marks an important milestone for the Fiji Public Service as we have just completed Cohort One of the Service Exam: Introduction to Government Machineries, and I commend every officer who has successfully completed this program.” He clarified that the purpose of the exam is not to complicate entry to the civil service but to ensure that all officers have a consistent understanding of government systems, public service standards, and commitment to service excellence.

The reintroduction of the examinations aims to enhance recruitment and training processes within the public service, with the initiative currently being piloted across five different ministries. Graduate Jona Bolatabanivau shared how the course has broadened his understanding of public service roles, asserting that the training will enable him to provide better services to the community.

Atelaite Rokosuka, head of the Fiji Learning Institute for Public Service, explained that the program’s revival aligns with Cabinet’s directive to equip civil servants with essential knowledge. She encouraged any civil servant who has not undergone similar training to take advantage of this opportunity, highlighting its potential to enhance their professional capabilities.

The initiative is set to expand further, with plans to roll out the program to all government ministries starting this March, paving the way for a more knowledgeable and competent public service in Fiji.
