Fiji Reframes Online Child Safety with Language Shift to Protect Rights

In 2023, statistics indicate that over 741,000 Fijians aged 15 and older accessed the internet, while approximately 826,000 individuals owned mobile phones, according to the International Telecommunication Union. These figures were disclosed by Policing and Communications Minister Ioane Nailavurua during a recent parliamentary session focused on community policing and fostering national consciousness.

Minister Nailavurua highlighted the significant benefits that internet service providers bring to the youth, providing them with essential opportunities for education, culture, entertainment, social connections, and access to crucial information and services. However, he also expressed concern regarding the uncontrolled use and potential exploitation that technology presents, particularly for children and young people. In recent years, the National Centre for Missing and Exploited Children has recorded a staggering number of cyber theft cases, ranging from 1,800 to 8,200.

Emphasizing that child safety is a collective responsibility, he underscored the importance of addressing online child sexual exploitation and abuse, referring to it as a priority for the National Task Force. In his statement, he recommended a language shift when discussing these serious issues, advocating for terminology that centers on the rights and dignity of children rather than on criminal acts.

Minister Nailavurua noted that globally, the term “child pornography” has been replaced with references to “child abuse” and “child exploitation” to better reflect the gravity of these offenses. By doing so, he aims to reshape the narrative around these issues, ensuring that the focus remains on the violation of a child’s innocence and rights.

This proactive approach highlights the commitment of Fijian authorities to protect children in a rapidly evolving digital landscape, recognizing the dual nature of technology as both a resource and a potential danger. With continued awareness and action, there is hope for a safer online environment for the country’s youth.
