The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially those in the Western Division, to take immediate action to protect themselves against the rise of climate-sensitive diseases. With floodwaters in Fiji receding, the threat of illnesses such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea (LTDD) increases.
Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of preventative measures during this transition period. “While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high,” she stated. The organization has been active over the last three days, assessing 75 households and assisting over 295 individuals in need, both in evacuation centers and the broader community.
To support these efforts, essential items such as Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets have been distributed to impacted areas. The team in the Western Division continues to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that assistance is available as needed.
Given that there are identified hotspots for LTDD in the region, the Fiji Red Cross urges residents to remain vigilant and adhere to health guidelines. Those experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue are strongly advised to seek medical care immediately, as early treatment can significantly improve outcomes.
The Director General expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donations of water to support affected families, underscoring the importance of clean drinking water during recovery. Ms. Dawai also acknowledged the collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, noting that “strong partnerships are essential in times like these.”
The combined efforts of these organizations aim to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks and facilitate recovery for the affected communities. By focusing on hygiene, support, and community vigilance, there is hope for a healthier future amid these challenges.
This situation highlights the resilience of communities when faced with adversity and the critical role of collaboration. With continued support and preparedness, there is optimism for recovery and the protection of public health in Fiji.
