The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially those in the Western Division, to take prompt action to protect against the rise of climate-related diseases following recent floods. As floodwaters begin to recede, the threat of diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and diarrheal illnesses is becoming increasingly concerning.

Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized that while the immediate threat of flooding is decreasing, the potential for disease outbreaks remains high. She encouraged everyone to engage in simple yet crucial preventive actions to ensure their health and safety.

In the past few days, the organization has conducted assessments in 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in evacuation centers and local communities in the Western Division. They have distributed essential supplies, including Hygiene and Dignity Kits, jerry cans, mosquito nets, black packs, and blankets to those affected.

Teams in the region are maintaining a close watch on the situation while offering necessary support. Certain areas in the Western Division are identified as hotspots for climate-sensitive diseases like LTDD, underscoring the need for residents to remain vigilant and proactive.

The Fiji Red Cross has urged anyone experiencing symptoms associated with these diseases—such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or fatigue—to seek medical help immediately, as early intervention is critical and can save lives.

Additionally, Dawai expressed sincere gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for donating clean drinking water to families impacted by the floods. She noted the significance of this support in aiding communities during recovery.

The Fiji Red Cross Society also acknowledged the collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, highlighting that strong alliances are crucial in effectively responding to such crises. By encouraging proactive measures, the organization aims to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and assist affected areas as they work towards recovery.

The hope is that by taking these necessary precautions and fostering community spirit, Fiji can emerge from this challenging time more resilient than before, focusing on health and recovery for all.
