The Fiji Red Cross Society is urging communities in the Western Division to take immediate action to protect themselves against a rise in climate-sensitive diseases as floodwaters begin to recede across Fiji. Diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea are known to peak in the aftermath of flooding.
Director General Ragigia Dawai emphasized that while the risk from flooding is diminishing, the potential for disease outbreaks still looms. She called on families to implement simple yet crucial preventative measures. Over the past three days, the Fiji Red Cross has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals, both in evacuation centers and local communities.
They have distributed essential items including Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, mosquito nets, and blankets to support those affected. The team continues to monitor the situation closely in the Western Division, where certain areas are especially prone to disease outbreaks. Residents are strongly encouraged to seek medical attention if they exhibit symptoms such as fever, vomiting, or unusual fatigue, as early treatment can be lifesaving.
Additionally, Dawai expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of clean drinking water, which is crucial for recovery. She also acknowledged the partnership with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other collaborators, highlighting that effective teamwork enhances the impact of their efforts.
The ongoing initiative strives to minimize the risk of disease while supporting communities on their path to recovery. This proactive response illustrates the resilience and solidarity among organizations and communities during challenging times.
In summary, the Fiji Red Cross is taking vital steps to address potential health risks following flooding, reinforcing the importance of community engagement and resource sharing in recovery efforts.
