As floodwaters in Fiji begin to recede, the Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, particularly in the Western Division, to take immediate measures to protect themselves against a rise in climate-sensitive diseases. Among the illnesses that pose imminent threats are Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea, which often see an increase during this season.
Ragigia Dawai, the Director-General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasizes that while the immediate threat from flooding is diminishing, the risk of disease outbreaks remains significant. Over the past three days, the organization has evaluated the conditions of 75 households and provided assistance to more than 295 individuals in need, both in evacuation centers and within local communities.
Red Cross teams in the Western Division are actively monitoring the evolving situation and rendering support as necessary.
In light of this scenario, it is heartening to see communities and organizations rallying together to combat health risks following the flooding. By taking proactive steps, residents can safeguard their health and well-being while also fostering a spirit of resilience in the face of climate-related challenges.
This situation serves as a reminder of the importance of preparedness and community support in overcoming natural disasters and their aftermath.
