The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially in the Western Division, to take proactive measures against the rising threat of climate-sensitive diseases in the aftermath of recent floods. As floodwaters start to recede, concerns about diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea (LTDD) are becoming increasingly important.
Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, highlighted the continued risk despite the flood’s immediate dangers diminishing. “We are urging people to take straightforward yet essential steps to protect themselves and their families,” she stated.
In response to the recent flooding, the Fiji Red Cross has been active over the past few days, providing assistance to 295 individuals and assessing 75 households in the Western Division, both in evacuation centers and local communities. The organization has distributed Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets to those affected.
Teams in the Western Division are maintaining vigilant monitoring of the situation and are committed to offering support as needed. With certain areas identified as hotspots for LTDD, it is vital for local residents to stay alert and implement preventative measures.
The Fiji Red Cross advises anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue to seek immediate medical attention, emphasizing that early diagnosis and treatment can be life-saving.
Additionally, the organization expressed sincere gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of clean drinking water to families in distress. “Access to clean drinking water is critical during this recovery phase, and this contribution will significantly support our communities,” Ms. Dawai remarked.
The Fiji Red Cross Society also acknowledged the invaluable collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners. “Strong partnerships are vital in times like these, and we appreciate the teamwork that enhances the effectiveness of our collective response,” Ms. Dawai noted.
Through these collaborative efforts, the Fiji Red Cross aims to mitigate the risks of disease outbreaks and assist communities in their healing journey, showcasing the resilience and support of the Fijian people in facing recovery challenges.
This article serves as a reminder of the importance of community awareness and readiness in combating health risks following natural disasters. Together, with proactive measures and support, affected communities can pave the way toward recovery and resilience.
