As floodwaters in Fiji begin to recede, the Fiji Red Cross Society is emphasizing the importance of taking precautions to protect against climate-sensitive diseases that are likely to rise during this period. Regions in the Western Division are especially at risk for diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea, which typically see an increase this time of year.

Ragigia Dawai, the Director-General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, acknowledged that while the immediate threat posed by flooding is diminishing, the potential for disease outbreaks continues to be a significant concern. Over the past three days, the Red Cross has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to more than 295 individuals affected in both evacuation centers and local communities.

Relief teams in the Western Division remain vigilant, monitoring the situation and offering necessary support to those in need. This proactive response aims not only to address immediate challenges but also to foster resilience within communities as they recover from the impacts of flooding.

It is crucial for community members to stay informed and take precautionary measures during this vulnerable time, highlighting the importance of collective action in the face of climate-related challenges. The ongoing commitment of organizations like the Fiji Red Cross underscores a hopeful path towards recovery and health stability in the affected areas.

In summary, while Fiji is recovering from recent floods, it is essential for communities to remain alert to the risk of disease and take necessary precautions to protect public health.
