The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, particularly those in the Western Division, to take urgent precautions to protect against the potential rise in climate-sensitive diseases following the recent flooding in Fiji.

Although floodwaters are beginning to recede, the Society warns that the risk for diseases like Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea remains significant during this period. “While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high,” stated Ragigia Dawai, Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society. She encouraged individuals and families to adopt simple yet essential preventive measures.

In the last three days, the Red Cross has evaluated the situation of 75 households and assisted more than 295 people in both evacuation centers and local communities. To aid those affected, the organization has distributed Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets.

The team continues to monitor the situation closely and is providing necessary support to those in need. The Western Division has been identified as a hotspot for illnesses related to Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea, making it crucial for residents to remain alert and proactive about their health.

The Fiji Red Cross urges anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical attention promptly. Early intervention is vital and can help save lives.

In addition, Ms. Dawai expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous water donations to affected families, stating, “Clean drinking water is crucial at this stage, and this contribution will greatly aid communities in their recovery.” The Society also thanked the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners for their effective collaboration during this critical time.

“Strong partnerships are essential in times like these,” Ms. Dawai emphasized. “We deeply value the support and teamwork that have enhanced our efforts.” The ultimate goal is to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and to assist affected communities in their recovery journey.

This situation highlights the resilience and solidarity of communities in the face of adversity. By taking proactive measures and working together, there is hope for a healthier and more secure future for the residents of Fiji.
