The Fiji Red Cross Society is urging communities, especially in the Western Division, to take immediate precautions to protect against an increase in climate-sensitive diseases. As floodwaters recede across Fiji, the risk of diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea rises significantly during this period.
“While the immediate threat of flooding is easing, the risk of disease transmission remains high,” emphasized Ragigia Dawai, Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society. She urged everyone to adopt essential preventative measures to safeguard themselves and their families.
In the last three days, the organization has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to more than 295 individuals in evacuation centers and local communities. The Red Cross has been distributing Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Blank Packs, and blankets to support those affected.
Currently, teams in the Western Division are closely monitoring the situation and are prepared to offer continued assistance. There are specific hotspot areas for climate-sensitive diseases in the region, underscoring the need for residents to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions.
The Fiji Red Cross advises anyone experiencing symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical attention promptly, as early intervention can be lifesaving.
Moreover, Ms. Dawai expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of water to affected families. “Access to clean drinking water is vital at this stage, and such contributions significantly aid communities in their recovery,” she noted.
The organization also appreciates the collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, highlighting the importance of strong partnerships in effectively responding to these challenges.
Through these collective efforts, the Fiji Red Cross aims to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and assist affected communities on their path to recovery.
This collaborative response showcases the strength and resilience of communities in the face of adversity. Together, with proactive measures and support, there is hope for a healthier and safer future.
