The Fiji Red Cross Society is urging individuals, particularly those in the Western Division, to take immediate action to protect themselves against the imminent rise of climate-sensitive diseases following recent flooding. With floodwaters starting to recede, the organization has highlighted illnesses like Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea (LTDD) as significant threats during this recovery period.

Ragigia Dawai, Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of community vigilance, stating, “While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high. We are calling on everyone to take simple but vital steps to protect themselves and their families.”

In the past three days, over 75 households have been assessed by the Fiji Red Cross, with assistance provided to more than 295 individuals in evacuation centers and local communities. The organization has distributed essential Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, mosquito nets, black packs, and blankets to those affected.

Ongoing monitoring of the situation is being conducted by teams in the Western Division, especially in hotspot areas for LTDD, where heightened awareness and preventive measures are critical. The Fiji Red Cross encourages anyone exhibiting symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical assistance without delay, as early treatment can be lifesaving.

In a show of community support, the Fiji Red Cross has expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for its generous donation of clean drinking water to families in need, a resource that is essential during this recovery phase. Ms. Dawai highlighted the significance of this contribution, noting, “Clean drinking water is crucial at this stage, and this contribution will go a long way in supporting communities as they recover.”

The Fiji Red Cross Society also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, with Ms. Dawai stressing that strong partnerships are vital in facing such challenges. The organization aims to mitigate disease outbreak risks and support affected communities as they navigate through recovery, reinforcing the collective strength of their combined resources.

As Fiji continues to recover from the impacts of flooding, the determination and support from both community organizations and residents foster a spirit of resilience, reflecting hope for a healthier and safer future.

This proactive approach in disaster response underlines the importance of community solidarity and preparedness, setting an example of resilience in the face of environmental challenges.
