The Fiji Red Cross Society is urging communities, especially those in the Western Division, to take urgent precautions to protect themselves from a rise in climate-sensitive diseases following the recent flooding. As floodwaters begin to recede across the region, the risks associated with diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea (LTDD) are becoming a major concern.

Director General Ragigia Dawai emphasized that while the immediate threat from flooding is diminishing, the potential for disease outbreaks remains significant. “We are calling on everyone to take simple but vital steps to protect themselves and their families,” he stated.

In response, the Fiji Red Cross has already assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in the Western Division, both in evacuation centers and within the community. They have distributed essential items such as hygiene and dignity kits, jerry cans, mosquito nets, and blankets to those affected.

The organization is continuously monitoring the situation in the Western Division and supplying support where necessary. There are several hotspot areas for LTDD, so it’s crucial that residents remain vigilant and adhere to preventative measures.

The Fiji Red Cross advises anyone experiencing symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical attention without delay, as early treatment can be life-saving.

Additionally, Dawai expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of clean drinking water, highlighting its importance in aiding the recovery of affected families. She also thanked the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners for their collaborative efforts during this critical response phase.

“Strong partnerships are essential in times like these, and we deeply value the support and teamwork that have enhanced our efforts,” added Dawai. Together, they aim to mitigate the risk of disease outbreaks and facilitate the recovery of impacted communities.

This news highlights the resilience of communities in Fiji and the proactive steps being taken to combat the aftermath of natural disasters. With continued support and vigilance, there is hope for recovery and a swift return to normalcy for those affected.
