The Fiji Red Cross Society is urging communities, especially in the Western Division, to take immediate action to protect themselves from the rise of climate-sensitive diseases as floodwaters recede across Fiji. Diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea (LTDD) often see an increase during this period.

Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized the continuing risk of these diseases despite the decline in flooding. She called for everyone to adopt simple yet crucial preventive measures to safeguard themselves and their families.

In the last three days, the Fiji Red Cross has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in need, both in evacuation centers and local communities. To support the affected populations, they have distributed Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets.

Monitoring efforts are ongoing in the Western Division, where specific areas are identified as hotspots for LTDD, making it essential for residents to remain alert and proactive. The Fiji Red Cross advises anyone experiencing symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical help immediately, highlighting that early intervention can be life-saving.

The organization expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous water donation, recognizing the critical need for clean drinking water during this recovery phase. They also acknowledged the cooperation of the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, underscoring the importance of strong collaborations in crisis situations.

By taking these precautionary measures, the Fiji Red Cross aims to reduce the chances of disease outbreaks and support the recovery of the affected communities.

This situation presents an opportunity for unity and resilience as communities come together to face challenges. In the aftermath of a disaster, the proactive steps taken can nurture recovery and reinforce the strength of local networks.

Overall, the effort to combat health risks in the wake of flooding is a vital step forward in ensuring the well-being of Fiji’s communities during this challenging time.
