The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, particularly in the Western Division, to take essential precautions against an increase in climate-sensitive diseases following recent flooding. As floodwaters recede, diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea (LTDD) could rise, which has heightened concerns for public health.
Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized that while the immediate threat from flooding is diminishing, the risk of disease remains elevated. “We are urging everyone to adopt simple yet crucial measures to protect themselves and their families,” she stated.
Over the past three days, the Fiji Red Cross has conducted assessments of 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in evacuation centers and local communities in the Western Division. The organization has distributed Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets to those affected.
In addition to monitoring the situation closely, the Red Cross has identified specific hotspot areas in the Western Division for LTDD, making it crucial for residents to remain vigilant and take preventative actions. They advise anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical attention promptly, as early treatment can be life-saving.
The organization also expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of clean drinking water, which is vital for communities recovering from the disaster. Ms. Dawai noted, “Clean drinking water is crucial at this stage, and this contribution will significantly support the affected families.”
The Fiji Red Cross Society acknowledged the collaborative efforts with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, highlighting the importance of strong partnerships during challenging times. “We deeply value the support and teamwork that have enhanced the impact of our initiatives,” added Ms. Dawai.
By encouraging proactive measures and fostering community partnerships, the Fiji Red Cross aims to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks and assist communities in their recovery process.
In summary, as Fiji transitions from flood recovery to safeguarding public health, community cooperation and prompt action can pave the way for resilience. This situation exemplifies the importance of solidarity in times of crisis and the critical role of organizations like the Fiji Red Cross in fostering health and safety within affected communities.
