The Fiji Red Cross Society is strongly urging communities in the Western Division to take immediate measures to protect themselves from the increase in climate-sensitive diseases following the recent flooding. As the floodwaters recede, diseases such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhoea are expected to surge, creating health risks for residents.
Ragigia Dawai, Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, stressed the importance of taking simple yet crucial steps for health safety during this time. In the last three days, the organization has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals in evacuation centers and local communities. In response to the urgent needs, they have distributed essential hygiene supplies, including Hygiene and Dignity Kits, Jerry Cans, Mosquito nets, Black Packs, and blankets.
The team in the Western Division is actively monitoring the situation and is ready to provide additional support when necessary. With certain areas identified as hotspots for the aforementioned diseases, it is critical for residents to remain vigilant and implement preventive measures.
The Fiji Red Cross advises anyone showing symptoms such as fever, vomiting, diarrhoea, or unusual fatigue to seek medical attention promptly, as early treatment is crucial for saving lives. Additionally, the organization expressed gratitude to Frezco Beverages Ltd for their generous donation of clean water to support families affected by the floods, recognizing that access to clean drinking water is vital during recovery efforts.
Furthermore, Ms. Dawai acknowledged the collaboration with the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners, emphasizing that strong partnerships enhance their response efforts during emergencies. The organization aims to reduce the risk of disease outbreaks while helping communities recover from the recent crises.
In light of these efforts, there remains hope as the collective action of organizations and local communities can lead to improved health outcomes and strengthened resilience in the face of climate challenges.
This urgent call to action highlights the importance of community awareness and the role of collective efforts in mitigating the impact of disasters, showcasing the power of unity and collaboration in overcoming adversity.
