The Fiji Red Cross Society is intensifying its commitment to gender equality, social inclusion, and youth participation as part of its strategic focus in humanitarian operations across the country. Recently, the organization launched its first-ever early action plan for the region, which aims to enhance its responsiveness to climate-induced challenges.

According to the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, Ragigia Dawai, the organization is dedicated to delivering support based on the principles of voluntarism and impartiality. This commitment ensures that assistance reaches all communities fairly, with a particular emphasis on giving vulnerable groups a voice in shaping the services provided.

Dawai highlighted the pivotal role of youth in the society’s efforts, stating that young people are “integral” to both immediate response initiatives and the organization’s leadership pipeline. This focus on youth is part of a broader strategy to cultivate resilience within communities, particularly in light of increasing climatic events affecting the region.

Aligned with previous initiatives aimed at disaster preparedness and community responsiveness, the Fiji Red Cross has been proactive in engaging young volunteers in vital programs that instill disaster awareness and resilience from a young age. Similar past efforts have included educational campaigns that encourage local leadership in disaster risk management.

The ongoing work of the Fiji Red Cross highlights a hopeful outlook for enhancing community safety and participation. By emphasizing diversity and inclusive practices in its approach to humanitarian aid, the organization not only addresses immediate needs but also fosters a culture of readiness and resilience among future generations. The combination of support, volunteerism, and community engagement forms a robust foundation to help Fiji navigate the challenges posed by climate change and natural disasters effectively.
