The Fiji Red Cross Society is calling on communities, especially in the Western Division, to proactively protect themselves against an increase in climate-sensitive diseases as floodwaters start to recede across the country. The organization is particularly concerned about illnesses such as Leptospirosis, Typhoid, Dengue Fever, and Diarrhea, which often surge during this transitional period.
Ragigia Dawai, the Director General of the Fiji Red Cross Society, emphasized the importance of taking necessary precautions to safeguard families, stating, “While the immediate danger of flooding is subsiding, the risk of disease remains high.”
In response to the situation, the Fiji Red Cross has assessed 75 households and provided assistance to over 295 individuals affected in evacuation centers and surrounding communities within the last three days. The organization has distributed crucial hygiene and dignity kits, jerry cans, mosquito nets, black packs, and blankets to those in need.
The teams in the Western Division continue to monitor the evolving situation to offer ongoing support. Specific areas are identified as hotspots for these diseases, intensifying the need for residents to be aware and take preventive actions.
The Fiji Red Cross urges anyone experiencing symptoms like fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or extreme fatigue to seek medical help promptly, as early treatment is vital for saving lives. Dawai also acknowledged the generous contribution of clean drinking water from Frezco Beverages Ltd, highlighting its significance in aiding recovery for affected families.
Furthermore, the Fiji Red Cross expressed gratitude to the National Disaster Management Office (NDMO) and other partners for their collaborative efforts during this challenging time. Dawai noted, “Strong partnerships are essential in times like these,” recognizing that teamwork enhances the efficiency of their response.
As communities work together to mitigate disease risks and provide support, there is hope for recovery and resilience in the face of adversity.
