Fiji Reclaims $6M in Unpaid Wages as Employers Urged to Retain Skilled Talent

Over the past five years, more than $6 million in unpaid wages has been reclaimed for workers in Fiji, as highlighted by the Minister for Employment and Workplace Relations, Agni Deo Singh, during a parliamentary session. This significant recovery underscores the persistent issue of non-compliance with labor laws, a key factor contributing to the increasing emigration of skilled workers from the country.

Singh pointed out that ministry inspections have revealed ongoing violations of minimum employment standards, which have left many employees feeling undervalued and lacking clear opportunities for career growth. He emphasized that many workers do not leave solely in pursuit of higher wages; instead, their migration is often driven by feelings of being unsupported, unfairly treated, and denied their fundamental rights. The recovery of these unpaid wages, Singh stated, reflects the considerable challenges faced by workers in Fiji.

Addressing the issue of labor migration, Singh stressed that the responsibility does not rest solely with the government. He urged both public and private sector employers to enhance their strategies for retaining skilled professionals. This includes prioritizing leadership development, implementing succession planning, and fostering supportive workplace cultures as essential components of organizational policies. Such measures are crucial if Fiji aims to retain its talented workforce, ensuring that workers feel valued and supported within their careers.

The government’s acknowledgment of these issues and the call for action from employers represent a hopeful step towards improving conditions for workers in Fiji, potentially curtailing the trend of skilled labor leaving the country. By focusing on support and development, there is an opportunity for Fiji to create an environment where its workers can thrive.
