Fiji’s featherweight boxing champion, Junior Binnu Singh, is preparing for a crucial showdown against Australia’s Runqi Zhou for the WBA Oceania title, scheduled for July 19 at the Vodafone Arena in Suva. This upcoming match marks a historic moment for Fijian boxing, as it will be the first WBA title fight held in the country.

Singh, 24 years old, holds a record of 12 professional fights with only one loss. His last bout was a triumphant win against Krishnil Mudaliar in September, where he claimed the WBF Australasian title. He is keen to assert that Fijian boxers can compete at high levels, expressing motivation not only to win but also to honor his late friend, fellow boxer Ubayd Haider, who tragically passed after facing Zhou in October 2024.

The excitement surrounding this fight is palpable, with local promoter Nahroon Buksh organizing the event as part of his inaugural tournament, which will also feature other title matches, including one for the NZPBC Oriental Superfeatherweight title. Singh’s rigorous training, which may soon include specialized sessions in Melbourne, aims to prepare him for the challenge posed by Zhou, who has a record of nine wins, three losses, and one draw.

As preparations progress, Singh remains determined, stating, “I know he (Zhou) is a good boxer; I’m coming prepared.” This sentiment echoes the hopes for increased recognition and support for boxing in Fiji, with the potential for more international events in the future.

This bout not only represents Singh’s personal aspirations but also serves as an important step for the Fijian boxing community, inspiring young fighters to pursue their dreams and elevating Fiji’s profile on the international boxing stage. The event is expected to draw significant local support and could herald a new era for the sport within the region, reinforcing Fiji’s emerging status as a boxing hub.
