The Ministry of Disaster Management is collaborating with various entities, including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Republic of Fiji Military Forces, the Health Emergency Medical Assistance Team, the National Fire Authority, and the Fiji Police Force, to develop an assistance package for Vanuatu. Minister of Disaster Management, Sakiasi Ditoka, mentioned that a detailed action plan is in progress for the Government’s consideration.
Mr. Ditoka expressed hope that a team could be sent to Vanuatu shortly, emphasizing that these teams are prepared to provide specific support based on Vanuatu’s urgent needs. He has also contacted his Vanuatu counterpart to extend condolences and offer Fiji’s comprehensive support following the devastating earthquake that has resulted in fatalities and significant damage.
In addition to reaching out to Vanuatu, Fiji is engaging with Australia and other regional partners to explore coordinated responses to the crisis. The planning process is underway to assess the extent of the damage reported by Vanuatu and to determine the resources available for mobilization.
The possible assistance from Fiji includes engineering and manpower support from the military, emergency health services from the Ministry of Health, search and rescue expertise from the Fire Authority, and law enforcement and disaster planning assistance from the Police Force and the National Disaster Risk Management Office.
To align Fiji’s aid with Vanuatu’s specific requirements and adhere to regional disaster response protocols, all offers for assistance will be directed through the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. They are waiting for a needs list from Vanuatu that will specify the resources required, allowing Fiji to refine its deployment plan effectively.
In summary, Fiji is stepping up to support Vanuatu during this challenging time, demonstrating a spirit of solidarity and collaboration among Pacific nations. As both nations work together in the aftermath of this disaster, the hope is that the support provided will aid in recovery and rebuilding efforts.
