Fiji is poised to enhance its immigration system following the completion of an extensive review of its immigration laws. The review has put forward several recommendations aimed at establishing clearer and more inclusive policies, strengthening national security, and adopting best practices observed globally in immigration services.
Acting Attorney General and Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga expressed pride in the collaborative effort that led to this review, stating that it marks a significant milestone in the government’s objective of modernizing Fiji’s immigration framework. Turaga noted that the report’s findings are set to guide the government in creating a secure and efficient immigration system that accurately reflects the needs of the Fijian populace.
This review comes in response to the growing complexities of global migration and the need for Fiji to align its immigration practices with both local values and international standards. The project was conducted in partnership with the International Organization for Migration, the Ministry of Immigration, and the Fiji Law Reform Commission, underscoring a collective commitment to producing a fair immigration landscape.
Fiji has faced mounting pressure regarding its immigration policies, especially in light of the recent surge in illegal immigration numbers, which have doubled within a year.
