Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne has announced a robust lineup of 23 players for today’s Pacific Nations Cup opener against Samoa at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva.
“This is the optimal combination considering our players from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres,” Byrne stated. “The team has shown great promise during training, though we are monitoring a few injuries.”
Byrne acknowledged the pressure of facing Samoa, a modest challenge he embraces. “It’s a healthy pressure; it’s part of the game, and there’s always some nerves associated with the first home match,” he added. “It’s not about me feeling nervous; it’s crucial that the team is well-prepared.”
Byrne expressed excitement over the performance of the Fijian Drua pair, centre Iosefo Masi and Selestino Ravutaumada, following their Olympic Games sevens commitments. He highlighted new partnerships, including Inia Tabuavou in the centre alongside Masi, with Caleb Muntz back to full fitness. He also mentioned Vuate Karawalevu and Apisalome Vota as key players for the match.
Byrne is aware of the formidable challenge posed by the strong Samoan forward pack. “We anticipate a tough contest as they will come hard, and our players thrive on physicality in the forwards. Battles between island teams often hinge on the effectiveness of the forward packs.”
He also pointed out the need for vigilance against Samoa’s backline. “We must ensure we’re prepared to defend against their aggressive running lines. Confidence will be key as we approach this physically intense match,” he noted.
