Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs Lenora Qereqeretabua has expressed appreciation for a significant increase in the Ministry’s budget for the 2025-2026 financial year, amounting to $7.4 million. This increase underlines the Fijian government’s intent to enhance the country’s global presence and establish stronger international partnerships.

In her recent statements, Qereqeretabua highlighted the Prime Minister’s announcement of a $51 million allocation to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, emphasizing that Fiji’s diplomatic efforts are increasingly substantial and not merely symbolic. She noted that Fijian diplomats are being encouraged to actively promote national interests and ensure Fiji’s voice is amplified on the global stage.

Current diplomatic ties include relationships with 182 nations and 13 overseas missions, with plans for the establishment of a new embassy in Israel, aimed at strengthening collaboration in agriculture, climate change, and water management. The budget also allocates $2.57 million to review post allowances for diplomats, marking the first adjustment since 2005 and aligning these with United Nations living cost benchmarks, which reflects a meaningful investment in the welfare of those representing Fiji abroad.

Previously, reports indicated a broader governmental budget strategy aimed at resilient diplomatic and peacekeeping efforts, with investments designed to enhance Fiji’s role in international relations. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is set to operationalize its objectives effectively through these financial commitments, showcasing a promising future for Fiji’s global diplomatic engagements.

Such initiatives signal a proactive stance in fostering international relationships while ensuring that the interests of Fijian citizens are prioritized in diplomatic discussions. With this renewed focus and financial backing, there is optimism that Fiji will continue to flourish within global affairs, benefiting its people and bolstering its international reputation.
