The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has provided Fiji’s Ministry of Health with 3,000 essential emergency antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to aid in the country’s response to a significant rise in HIV infections. This support comes at a crucial time, as Fiji has experienced a staggering 260 percent increase in new HIV cases over the past year.
The Ministry of Health is dedicated to stabilizing the supply of HIV test kits and ensuring that ARV medication is accessible to all individuals in need. Health Minister Dr. Atonio Lalabalavu reassured the public that there is a steady supply of ARV drugs and urged people to continue testing and adhering to treatment protocols to help curb the spread of the virus.
“The timely delivery of these emergency ARV drugs demonstrates our commitment to leaving no one behind in the fight against HIV. This partnership with UNDP ensures that we maintain continuity of care for our people and strengthen our capacity to manage the current surge,” he stated.
Munkhtuya Altangerel, UNDP Resident Representative for the Pacific Office in Fiji, highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts in tackling this crisis, stating that their work alongside the Ministry of Health aims to ensure critical HIV services remain uninterrupted. He underscored the necessity of accessing life-saving treatment to protect public health and bolster the resilience of affected communities.
In July 2024, a financing agreement was signed between the Ministry of Health and UNDP under the Multi-country Western Pacific Programme in Fiji. This agreement outlines a framework for the procurement and delivery of essential HIV, STI, and TB drugs, alongside medical supplies and equipment.
The collaboration not only aims to enhance procurement systems but also ensures timely drug availability to vulnerable populations, promoting effective prevention and management of these infections. Additionally, this arrangement is vital for progressing toward the United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly Goal 3, which focuses on Good Health and Well-Being.
This proactive response and international collaboration highlight a hopeful path forward for Fiji as it navigates the challenges posed by rising HIV infections. The commitment to ensuring that all individuals have access to necessary treatments exemplifies the dedication to public health and community resilience.
