The Fijian government is facing an intensifying drug threat, prompting a shift away from traditional policing approaches, according to Minister for Policing Ioane Naivalurua. The recent surge in major drug seizures indicates a worsening situation, revealing organized and expanding networks operating within the country.
Naivalurua noted that recent drug hauls, including one that occurred just days ago, underscore the need for stronger and more proactive measures. “Things have moved quite fast… we are working hard towards addressing that,” he stated, emphasizing the urgency of the response.
In light of the escalating crisis, Naivalurua announced that the Fiji Police Force and the Republic of Fiji Military Forces are collaborating on joint operations. He highlighted the need for a significant enhancement of frontline actions to combat the increasing drug activity. Guided by the Counter Narcotic Strategy 2023–2028, the government recognizes that current responses may not keep pace with the rising drug challenges.
He called for a concerted effort, stating, “It’s about putting all our resources together.” Naivalurua urged various government agencies, families, and communities to take an active role in addressing the drug issue, emphasizing shared responsibility. The Minister pointed out that awareness alone is insufficient to manage the drug crisis, insisting on the necessity of a comprehensive response from both the government and society.
Additionally, there are plans to establish a Federal Bureau of Investigations in Fiji. While regional and international partners stand ready to lend support, Naivalurua insisted that Fiji must first demonstrate its commitment to decisive local action in the fight against drug-related crime.
By fostering collaborative efforts, the Fijian government aims not only to tackle the pressing challenges posed by drug networks but also to cultivate a united front involving all citizens. This collaborative spirit presents a hopeful pathway toward curbing the rising tide of drug-related issues, highlighting the importance of community involvement in creating a safer environment for all.
