The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection has expressed strong condemnation regarding the alleged bullying and abuse of a 16-year-old boy, which was captured in a video that circulated on social media over the weekend. The disturbing footage reportedly depicts the teenager being tied up, threatened with a machete, and forced to inhale marijuana.

Minister Sashi Kiran commented that this incident should not be dismissed as a prank but recognized as a serious act of violence against a child. She emphasizes the importance of prioritizing the safety and well-being of the boy and his family in light of this troubling event.

Kiran urges community leaders, including village heads, chiefs, and religious figures, to rally around the affected family, ensuring their protection and making it clear that violence and intimidation against children will not be tolerated. She highlights the critical role that adults, parents, and community leaders play in acting promptly when children are at risk and in reporting such abuse to law enforcement.

The minister’s remarks underline the urgent need for stronger community engagement, open discussions with youth about the challenges of bullying and substance abuse, and increased support for parents and guardians in fostering a safe environment for children. She also mentions that efforts are underway on Fiji’s National Action Plan on Violence Against Children. Additionally, plans to launch a Parenting App aim to assist caregivers in better protecting and guiding their children.

This incident not only highlights the issues of child safety and community responsibility but also shows a commitment to creating a supportive network for the youth, embodying hope for a future where children can thrive free from fear and harm.
