Fiji is set to send troops to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in the rehabilitation efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck the region earlier this week. The deployment will include personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Police as part of a dedicated team from Fiji.

This initiative is in accordance with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu in its recovery efforts. In conversations with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, Rabuka reaffirmed Fiji’s readiness to assist and expressed his sorrow over the tragic impact of the earthquakes, which have resulted in at least 14 fatalities.

Rabuka noted that Fiji is coordinating with Australia and New Zealand to provide logistical assistance, acknowledging that the damage to the local airport runway poses challenges. The planned route for the deployment will be via Santo, Vanuatu, followed by a boat trip to reach the affected areas.

The earthquakes, particularly the powerful magnitude 7.3 quake, have caused extensive damage, affecting vital infrastructure such as hospitals, roads, and two significant water reservoirs, alongside disrupting gas lines. Additionally, a massive landslide has blocked the seaport, complicating the transportation of essential supplies and personnel.

As the situation unfolds, further updates will be provided.

This gesture underscores the solidarity and regional cooperation among Pacific nations in times of crisis, demonstrating a commitment to helping neighbors recover and rebuild. Through collaborative efforts, Fijian support brings hope to the people of Vanuatu in their time of need.
