Fijian military and police personnel are set to be deployed to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in recovery efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck earlier this week. This deployment aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to assist Vanuatu in its rebuilding process after the disaster.
Prime Minister Rabuka has communicated with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai, affirming Fiji’s readiness to provide support. He expressed deep sorrow over the tragic loss of life and the substantial devastation caused by the earthquakes, which have resulted in at least 14 fatalities and ongoing concerns due to aftershocks.
The damage has been extensive, impacting critical infrastructure such as hospitals, roads, buildings, and two major water reservoirs, as well as gas lines. Additionally, a massive landslide has obstructed the main seaport, complicating the transport of essential supplies and personnel to the affected areas.
Fiji is also collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to arrange logistical support, while acknowledging that the airport runway has suffered damage. The initial planned route for aid delivery will involve traveling through Santo, Vanuatu, and then using boats to reach the impacted locations.
This collaborative effort underscores the regional solidarity and support in times of crisis, highlighting the importance of community and resilience in recovery operations. Future updates will communicate further developments as the situation unfolds.
