Fiji’s Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will deploy a team to Vanuatu to assist in recovery efforts following a devastating 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the country on Tuesday. The Prime Minister indicated that there are also provisions in place for the potential repatriation of Fijians currently residing in Vanuatu, should the situation necessitate it.
A Fiji Airways aircraft is on standby to facilitate any necessary evacuations. Mr. Rabuka confirmed that the RFMF team will remain in Vanuatu throughout the Christmas season to provide ongoing support for relief operations.
The earthquake has tragically taken the lives of 14 individuals and left approximately 200 people injured. The disaster has resulted in significant destruction, including the collapse of homes, landslides obstructing roads, and damage to vehicles.
The Prime Minister underscored that this deployment is part of Fiji’s broader commitment to support its regional neighbors during crises, demonstrating the nation’s solidarity with Vanuatu during this challenging time.
This initiative highlights the strong bond and mutual support among Pacific Island nations, reinforcing hope and resilience in the wake of natural disasters. It serves as a reminder of the importance of community and cooperation in overcoming adversity.
