Fijian military and police personnel are set to deploy to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in rehabilitation efforts following two recent earthquakes. The initiative aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu in recovering from the catastrophic events.
Prime Minister Rabuka has been actively communicating with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, offering Fiji’s assistance in the crisis. He expressed sorrow over the loss of life and the extent of devastation caused by the earthquakes, which have claimed at least 14 lives and left citizens in distress.
Fiji is coordinating with Australia and New Zealand to facilitate logistical support for the recovery. However, challenges arise due to damage sustained by the airport runway, prompting plans for an alternative route through Santo, Vanuatu, followed by boat transport to the affected areas.
The earthquakes have wreaked havoc on the region, causing significant infrastructure damage, including to key facilities such as hospitals, roads, and water reservoirs, alongside a massive landslide that has blocked the seaport, hampering the crucial transport of supplies.
As the situation develops, the resilience and solidarity among neighboring nations like Fiji and Vanuatu stand as a beacon of hope for the affected communities. The collaborative efforts to provide assistance demonstrate a commitment to recovery and rebuilding amidst adversity.
