Fijian troops will be heading to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in the recovery efforts after two significant earthquakes struck earlier this week. The deployment will include personnel from both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Police.
This initiative is part of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu in its restoration efforts. Prime Minister Rabuka has been in communication with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai and has reaffirmed Fiji’s readiness to assist in the rehabilitation process. He also expressed his sorrow for the tragic loss of life resulting from the earthquakes.
Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to provide logistical support for the recovery, and while the airport runway in Vanuatu has sustained damage, they plan to enter through Santo and travel by boat to the affected areas.
The recent magnitude 7.3 earthquake has led to the death of at least 14 individuals in the Pacific Island nation, with ongoing aftershocks raising additional concerns. The destruction has severely impacted infrastructure, affecting hospitals, roads, buildings, two major water reservoirs, and gas lines. Furthermore, a substantial landslide has obstructed the seaport, hindering the delivery of crucial supplies and personnel.
This timely support from Fiji reflects a strong commitment to international solidarity and cooperation in times of need. The collaborative efforts from neighboring nations signal hope for Vanuatu’s swift recovery and rebuilding process.
Stay tuned for further updates on this developing situation.
