Fijian military and police personnel are set to be deployed to Vanuatu tomorrow to assist with recovery efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck the region earlier this week. This initiative is part of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu as it begins rehabilitation work in the aftermath of the disaster.
Prime Minister Rabuka has been coordinating with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai, to express Fiji’s willingness to provide assistance. He voiced his sorrow over the devastation caused by the earthquakes, which have already claimed the lives of at least 14 people, and he acknowledged the extensive damage inflicted on critical infrastructure.
The deployment strategy involves logistical collaboration with Australia and New Zealand, while addressing challenges such as damage to the airport runway. The team plans to reach the affected areas via Santo and then travel by boat to deliver much-needed aid and support.
