Fiji Rallies to Assist Vanuatu After Devastating Earthquake

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has declared that the Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) will dispatch a team to Vanuatu to aid in recovery efforts following the severe 7.3-magnitude earthquake that struck the nation on Tuesday.

The Prime Minister indicated that there are also plans to repatriate Fijians residing in Vanuatu if the situation warrants. A Fiji Airways aircraft is on standby to facilitate any necessary evacuations.

Rabuka confirmed that the RFMF team will remain in Vanuatu throughout the Christmas season to assist with ongoing relief operations. The earthquake has resulted in the tragic loss of 14 lives, with around 200 people injured, leading to significant destruction including the collapse of homes, landslides obstructing roads, and damage to vehicles.

The Prime Minister stressed that this deployment reflects Fiji’s broader commitment to support its neighbors during crises, showcasing the nation’s dedication to aiding Vanuatu in its recovery efforts.
