Fijian troops are set to be deployed to Vanuatu to support rehabilitation efforts following a series of devastating earthquakes that struck the area earlier this week. The team will include personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Police, reflecting a strong commitment to regional solidarity and assistance.
This deployment aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s vow to aid Vanuatu in its recovery. Rabuka has been in communication with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, affirming Fiji’s readiness to provide necessary support in the wake of the tragedy, which has taken the lives of at least 14 individuals and led to widespread destruction.
Victims face a dire situation, with considerable damage reported to critical infrastructure such as hospitals, roads, buildings, two major water reservoirs, and gas lines. The local seaport has also been blocked by a massive landslide, which complicates the distribution of essential supplies and personnel to the hardest-hit areas.
Despite logistical challenges, including damage to the airport runway, the planned route for assistance is via Santo, Vanuatu, with further transport by boat to reach the affected areas. Prime Minister Rabuka expressed his condolences for the loss of life and damage, highlighting the importance of timely and effective support from neighboring nations.
