Fijian troops are set to travel to Vanuatu tomorrow to assist with rehabilitation efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck earlier this week. The team will include personnel from both the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and the Police.

This deployment is part of Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu in its recovery process. In his discussions with Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, Rabuka expressed Fiji’s readiness to help and conveyed his sorrow over the severe impact of the earthquakes, which have resulted in at least 14 fatalities.

Prime Minister Rabuka highlighted that Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to provide logistical support, although he acknowledged that damage to the airport runway poses a challenge. The current plan is to route assistance through Santo, Vanuatu, and transport it by boat to reach the most affected areas.

The earthquakes have caused extensive damage to infrastructure, including hospitals, roads, buildings, two major water reservoirs, and gas lines. Additionally, a significant landslide has obstructed the seaport, hindering the delivery of essential supplies and personnel to the affected regions.

As the situation unfolds, further updates will be provided. This initiative underscores the importance of regional cooperation and solidarity in times of crisis, as neighboring nations come together to support Vanuatu in its hour of need. It is a reminder of the resilience and strength found in community and collaboration during challenging times.
