Fijian troops are set to arrive in Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in recovery efforts following two recent earthquakes that struck the nation. The deployment includes members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Police, highlighting Fiji’s commitment to assist its Pacific neighbor during this challenging time.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has been in touch with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister, Charlot Salwai, reiterating Fiji’s readiness to provide support. Rabuka expressed his deep sorrow over the destruction caused by the earthquakes, which have resulted in at least 14 fatalities.
Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to ensure logistical support, although damage to the airport runway poses challenges for direct transport. The team plans to travel via Santo and then utilize boat transport to reach the hardest-hit areas.
The earthquakes have wreaked havoc on Vanuatu’s infrastructure, severely impacting hospitals, roads, buildings, and vital resources such as water supply and gas lines. Compounding the situation, a substantial landslide has obstructed the seaport, hampering the delivery of essential supplies and personnel.
This deployment is a hopeful demonstration of regional solidarity, emphasizing the importance of support among Pacific nations in times of crisis. As recovery efforts progress, the resilience and collaboration of these nations will be crucial in helping Vanuatu rebuild and heal. Stay tuned for further updates on the situation.
