Fiji is sending troops to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in recovery efforts following two significant earthquakes that struck the region earlier this week. The deployment will include personnel from the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and police to help with the rehabilitation of affected areas.
This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to support Vanuatu as it works to recover from these disasters. Rabuka has been in communication with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, conveying Fiji’s readiness to assist in the rebuilding process. He expressed deep sympathy for the tragic impact of the earthquakes, which have already claimed at least 14 lives and raised concerns due to ongoing aftershocks.
The Prime Minister also mentioned that Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to provide logistical aid, although there are challenges, including damage to the airport runway. The team plans to travel through Santo before proceeding by boat to reach the affected areas.
Significant infrastructure damage has been reported, impacting hospitals, roads, buildings, and crucial utilities such as water reservoirs and gas lines. A landslide has further complicated recovery efforts by blocking access to the seaport, hindering the transport of vital supplies and personnel.
The situation in Vanuatu remains critical, but with the support of neighboring nations like Fiji, there is hope for recovery and rebuilding in the coming weeks. The solidarity displayed in the face of disaster is a reminder of the strength found in regional cooperation during times of need.
