Fijian troops are set to be deployed to Vanuatu tomorrow to aid in recovery efforts following two recent earthquakes that struck the region. Members of the Republic of Fiji Military Forces and Police will join the mission to support rehabilitation initiatives.
This deployment aligns with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka’s commitment to assist Vanuatu in its recovery. Rabuka has maintained communication with Vanuatu’s Prime Minister Charlot Salwai, reiterating Fiji’s readiness to extend help during this challenging time. He expressed sorrow over the severe impact of the earthquakes, which have tragically resulted in at least 14 fatalities.
The recent earthquakes, including a major 7.3 magnitude quake, have caused significant infrastructure damage across Vanuatu. Compounding the situation, a massive landslide has obstructed the seaport, restricting the flow of vital supplies and personnel to the affected areas.
Fiji is collaborating with Australia and New Zealand to provide logistical support, although the damage to the airport runway poses logistical challenges. The current strategy involves utilizing the route through Santo, Vanuatu, and then transferring aid by boat to reach the most affected locations.
